Gearbox has shit out on my T4 (5th gear sounds like the worlds ending!) so I went out and scored a 'box that was apparently out of a T4 TD off ebay. Came to fitting it today and its absolutely fuck all like the box in the van, the one thats already in has a big casting under the bellhousing with a bush in that accepts a bracket from the floor of the wagon, the 'new' box hasn't. The 'new' box has 02B cast into it which I'm lead to believe is right so where am I going wrong?

Please point me in the right direction/give me info/sell me a correct box before I kick the shit out of my dog LOL

Cheers, Lee.

Hi Lee. If you have the black pressed end on both you should just be able to swap the 5th gear assembly over while the box is in the van. I did it in a couple of hours with a modded gear puller.

Been under my 2.5 today. It has the big bush under the bellhousing so sounds like you have a 2.5 box there.

Sorry to hijack thread, but got same prob with my 88bhp 2.5.
5th gear makes a right row under load, all the others fine.
Chas, any suggestions where to source new gear assembly from?
Would be worth trying to fix before I go for a recon/breaker box.
Much appreciated,
Nick

Hi Nick.
I got mine from a TDI caddy gearbox, you should take everything you can when the housing comes off the end. Everything is pretty tight though and you will need a two legged puller plus a torx set for your ratchet.
The TDI has an extra tooth on the gears to give you a slightly taller ratio on fifth which helps on the motorway.

Cheers, Chas.

Thanks Chas,
Have had no luck today phoning round all the breakers
and Vw specialists. Only one place had one the same code
as mine which is EWB code. £595 +vat!!!!!!!!!!
Local garage reckons around £400+vat to repair mine + fitting.
Did you get your bits locally ( midlands )?
Will try another search for caddy boxes now.......

No problem Nick. Any Golf mk 3 or Caddy diesel should have a compatible box but the TDI gearboxes have the longer ratios. The Golf will probably be a bit easier to source. I picked mine up from Stafford way for £125 for a complete gearbox. You can probably find a tdi golf box for that much or less hopefully. Must be a mk 3 though as I believe the Mk4 was different mate.

Just spotted yours is an 88 though. I know the end covers are different from the 1.9td. If you wish, I can send you a photo of my 5th gear assembly from the 1.9 on the box so you can compare with yours. Have to pm me your email as I'm not clued up in putting pics on here.

Cheers, Chas.
