Topic: Toasted loom after steering wheel change Posted: 14 Oct 08 at 21:10 |
I've made an arse about moving this post and lost a bit of it but...
Question originally posted by peperami about the fact that his wiring loom has gone up in smoke, and was asking for help relating to why?

From whats left of it i believe it is. I have a feeling it may be the connector at the top of the steering column thats caused it, going to check.
Have the steering wheel and switches off now. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong or damage in this area. The plug that goes into this has residue on the end hole that the burnt wire is in. There is fire damage to about half a dozen other wires, I'm hoping these were just in contact with the burning wire. It was the grey with black trace

Hello, I had a similar problem with my wiring. Just sat on a slip road off a dual carriage way and thought it's a bit dark, so I went to switch the lights on and it's as if I'd just rubbed a magic lamp. The smell of burnt wire insulation combined with 20 years of grime and dust doesn't taste too good. When I investigated, I noticed the loom sat on top of the steering coloumn. I suspected the wire(s) may of chaffed over time and eventually shorted. I replaced the wire and wrapped the steering coloumn in gaffa tape to protect the wires, touch wood, it's been ok since. Good luck.

Do you have a T3 steering wheel on there or an alternative?

i had the same problem this morning. Smoke bellowing from the dash. At the time i had the headlights on dipped beam and was indicating right. Got steering column shroud off when i got home and found the grey with black trace wire had melted causing damage to some of the other wires around it. The wire comes from a plug on the column and is melted all the way to the fuse box. What do you think could have caused this?
Baxter i am using a momo steering wheel, i see in the last post you mentioned if standard wheel was used, what effect would this have?

I am using an aftermarket steering wheel aswell. Had trouble with the horn when fitting it so now have a door bell push on the dash. I think it's a mountney using a boss.
Ben it seems i was fairly lucky mine just burnt out between the back of the light switch and the black plug. Did take out a few wires with it though. My little black plug has a pin coming out of the third hole though.

well after baxter mentioned about the steering wheel i decided to take mine off for a look. I noticed that the pin that cancels the indicators had been rubbing.
on this circuit in the indicator/wiper switch housing.
i follow the circuit back and it goes to the pin where the melted cable plugged in.
i presume from this then that as i turned the steering wheel it made contact with the circuit and earth it causing the short circuit that fried the cable.
So any of you running after market wheels and bosses i urge you to check that this isn't happening to you. I have been using this wheel and boss for nearly a year now so why this fault only occured this morning is anyones guess!

All sorted and working now. Thanks to everyone for advice and support. Thanks Si wouldn't have thought it could be the steering wheel.

I've had the same issue with both Momo and Viktor bosses.
Its fried the switchgear and melted the same pin on 3 different vans so I am now loathed to use aftermarket wheels.
I do run one, but with the cancelling pin removed. It's not a fix and occasionally I forget but it is better than a toasted van.
