Hi

Reckon I `m on a run of bad luck at the minute, just got out of hospital today after an accident (long story) today to find my 174 (non DPF with 74,000 miles) had developed a turbo whistle

I took it straight to my mechanic (an independant that works predominately on VWs) who drove it and confirmed my fears that the turbo is shagged

I know its @ £1200 for a turbo via VW but there is a local firm that specialises in turbos and has a good reputation so will give them a shout in the morning

Anyone like to render a guess how much I`m looking at for a replacement (exchanging the old turbo)?

Is there anywhere else I should be looking for one of these? Are 174 turbos "KKK" or "Garrett"? Anyone have a part number?

Thanks in advanceSmile

hi dude, sorry to hear about your turbo, mine also failed last year and i was quoted £1200 from vw, but got a re worked one from http://www.turbocentreuk.co.uk/newfactexch.htm for £350 plus yours back to them. and fitted myself. mine was the kkk turbo but after talking to them on the phone i had to get mine out to get the part number for them as they said there were 3 differnt types used in the t5.

was very please with the service though and they give 12 months garentee.

I had my 55 plate axe 174 (non dpf) in at celtic tuning being remapped and eyeing other possible mods. The guy there said mine had a garret turbo and even with current remap to 230bhp it was only working at up to 30% of its stated max pressure, and when asked when they normally go, he said that these ones should out last the life of the engine!

Would be interested to find out which one yours is, hope its not a garret or ill have to keep some money in the bank for when it goes!

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replys

That link looks promising - £350 plus VAT is MUCH better than £1200 - reckon I`ve got a few phone calls ahead of me in the morning

Is it possible to see which turbo make/part number you have without removing half the engine?

Bought my 174hp LWB 4motion -07 a few months ago and 350 meters from the shop I bought it the turbo started to whistle! 98000km...
Drove it home (1250km) and let the local VW dealer look at it... confirmed that it was the turbo. As it was under warranty from the place I bought it they contacted each other and I got a new turbo fitted four weeks ago. After the turbo was changed the whistle was still present! Turned out to be the exhaust manifold gasket... but I don't care... I got a new turbo!

if i remember correctly u m ight be able to see the part number from underneith, you will have to jack it up remove the plastic sheild then take a tourch under with u and your head just fits up in a gap to be able to see the part number. mine was the kkk turbo and the reason for change was not a whistle the bearings had collapsted, fan rota bent and siezed. they send out by next day delivery and you have a week to fit and send yours back, all you have to do is phone back up and they arrage collection. simple.

oh and ps if you are doing it your self you will also need to get from the stealers the gaskets top and bottom.

Do double check before you shell out for a turbo... Like Maggy said a blown manifold gasket can give a chirp that can be mistaken for a wrecked turbo... Mine has this chirp and my blood ran cold when I first heard it.... I'll get round to sorting it soon

So should I be looking for signs of blow by around the turbo if the gasket is gone?

This happened after a "spirited" drive to the hospital after my accident

I didnt thrash it but I did push it on more than normal with a couple of 10 -15 second triple digit runs (on privately owned roads only you understand) but I doubt it ever got above 4 - 4.5K rpm at any point

It was fine prior to this journey, and today when I got out of hospital I instantly noticed the "whistle" which wasnt there previously

I have soot smudging on the heat shield just above the turbo.. If you have a looksee in that area at start up in the morning, then you may well see and smell fumes... It has got to be worth a look.

To be honest, I do like to make progress out on the road  but I always allow the engine to warm up gently and always drive gently for the last mile or so of a journey, reversing on to the drive, allowing the turbo to both cool and spool down

I`ll give that a whirl today

I fully agree with your views on driving, (particulary warming up) and firmly believe that whilst I was pushing on a bit harder than normal (middle of the night, empty/good roads and trying to get to hospital) I still wouldnt have done anything nearly rash enough to cause this issue on its own

Basically I drove 20/30 mph more in the fast places than normal but pretty much the same everywhere else

Out of curiousity, how can Celtic estimate what percentage of max pressure the turbo is running at?

I found out today (rather Heritage found out for me - thanks guys!!!) that my turbo is a Garrett

I`m still hopeful that it is something less sinister/expensive but will price up a replacement just in case

i'm hoping it is something else then! there is a sensor that reads the boost pressure in the turbo so the ecu can control how much the boost is depending on lots of variables. The max rated pressure on the garrett is way higher than the max that it was remapped to, so a non remapped 174 should be way within that.

It actually is remapped but only to a conservative 205 BHP as I believed (ironically) that going beyond this would have an adverse affect on reliability!

I had a turbo specialist look at it today and although its hard to see he spotted some soot where he reckoned should be clean and advised me to strip it and check everything else first as he wasnt convinced that the hiss I`m hearing is the turbo

So its booked in for thursday........................

Nice one! I'm glad that it is looking positive.... First we had the clonk, now we have the chirp!....LOL

I wonder if VW are trying to be as musical as that Ford that the orchestra play on the ad...

Perhaps we could nominate what VW could play on the musical Transporter... I'd go for "Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep" by "Middle of the road"

Hi,

My turbo went (in the middle of Glen Coe, Scotland!), VW quoted me £1200 for a replacement turbo, after charging me £30 for the diagnosis.

Got my mechanic friend to strip it back, its the KKK turbo that is in my van.  Really struggled to find a recon one, tried to put mine into get reconditioned however the guy who does it couldnt get a part  for it (spindle inside had snapped).  Eventually got new turbo from Europarts for about £800 (sobs).

Such a hassle to access the turbo!

My van is a 2004 T5 2.5 Tdi - hope this info is useful!

THis "chirp" or "whistle"....

Does the turbo on the 2.5 not make a faint whistle normally, like the 1.9 but less noticeable?  I can hear mine (sounds more like a hiss or a very high frequency squeal) when I accelerate, with window wound down and high hedgerows/walls for the sound to reflect off.  WIndows up it's inaudible.

Mine's a 174 with only 45k miles - don't tell me this is something to worry about???

Yes, there always was a sound like you describe (faint hiss) but now it has progressed to an intermittent chirp/whistle with no apparent pattern.

While for me its noticably different than before I bet most people getting in wouldnt notice

When I spoke to turbo specialists both asked me if it sounded like a "siren" (very loud) but when I explained/let one of them listen to it both reckoned that it may well be another less serious problem and not a turbo

It is being stripped tomorrow so I find out then.........
