Topic: 2600cc aircooled Posted: 29 Mar 07 at 18:53 |
apart from the bigger pistons and barrels and machining the heads what else is needed to build one of these things then.
i seem to remember dr dub has done one or two.....

depends upon whether you want to use a type 1 or type 4 case but basically...
stroker crank stronger rods case clearance more oil MORE COOLING
and a very large budget...

if you want to make BIG power then it will cost.... counterweighted stroker crank, rods to suit, change the cam, change for mechanical lifters if you want to rev it hard, look at full flow oiling & external oil cooler, maybe two.
look at custom big bore exhaust, think about what you want on the top end, carbs ? fuel injection (my recommendation) or forced induction with a big turbo (will make bags of power and will like the EFi too !) what cooling ? standard pancake type 4 or upright porsche style or even the massive typeIV style doghouse DTM (sp?) ones from the US.
i would humbly suggest that you think seriously about how much power you actually need, (realistically!) how much maintenance & reliability you want and how much you want to spend....
aircooled is an expensive way to make power.
if you just want more grunt then maybe build/have someone build a balanced, blueprinted 2,0l(or 2.2l), put electronic fuel injection on it, a good exhaust and intake system and give it death !

alternatively i can thoroughly recommend raceshack
www.raceshack.co.uk
who build and tune some of the best VW engines and also prep and tune some of the best racecars (of any make) in the uk...
they knows their stuff (and their type IVs) and theys is nice people too !
maybe give 'em and call and tell 'em what you want. they'll help you out and tell it to you straight...

and if your 2.6l fuel injected turbo race motor isn't enough you can always put a 100hp shot of nitrous through it...
easy to fit and setup... i had an install in the hightop westie for a while... and makes people laugh their heads off when you lift up the bed and show 'em a nos bottle the size of a submarine lol !

raceshack tuned my bus dan!! if you recall it was you who spotted the source of my fire after fitting the dells!!!! it was the lotus sunbeam owners dyno day which you were filming!!
im looking to pull more torque and a little better acceleration.
im getting a spare case and thought it could be the way to go.
i know you can build a 2.1 with no machining but how much better is that going to be??
currently running twin drla s and a bluebird stainless extractor.
much much better than standard but as you know always looking for more.
perhaps i will ring matt and connor and see what they suggest.
cheers for the feedback. jase

Jason, don't bother with a 2.1cc (96mm), KB piston kit is expensive and no real gain - A balanced STD Type 4 bottom end is very strong and as your looking for torque in a bus, it won't be excessively reving. Stock crank, rods, mild cam, 103mm piston kit (block machining req'd), 8-8.25 compression ratio, std lifters, 1800cc or worked heads, your carbs, nice exhaust and extra oil cooler with stat and you'll get a nice reliable motor for sensible money and 120 - 140 bhp. My last one pulled like a train and i genuinely couldn't feel the buggy on the back at all.

Jase - machining work is pretty straight forward on a type 4 case and heads with stock cooling, could use someone like Stateside tuning or one of the other VW people but its worth asking somone local as long as you explain exactly what you want - theres no substitute for cc's on a type 4 and 2.4 is both reliable and pretty affordable. My oval motor would be for sale if you've got a spare £6k. thought not !!.
