Any Subaru conversion is pretty easy.
If you have had a look at my thread Subaru Install from start to finish, you will get a rough idea of what is involved. All of the conversion parts are available off the shelf , ready for bolting together, including the wiring looms already done. If you are pretty OK mechanically , there is no reason why you cannot do the whole conversion over a weekend. Believe me you will not be disappointed. |

Do you still use the standard gearbox or do you have to upgrade

You can still retain your original gearbox as It will be fine.
Richard Jones sells a conversion bell housing that will allow the gearbox to mount directly to the engine, other threads here regarding ongoing conversions are using an RJES bell housing. You can also use an adaptor plate, the choice is yours. Check Out Richard Jones's site for all Subaru Conversion parts. www.rjes.com Also the Auto gearbox should you have one like myself is also fine and very easy to mount to the engine. Also check this out very interesting as it should answer a lot of your questions directly. http://www.rjes.com/html/bellhousing_vs_adaptor_plate.html#b vsa03 Edited by flightpath |

The main reason for using the RJES bellhousing is that eliminates some of the problems incurred from an adaptor plate.
Using the bell housing means you use the Subaru starter motor which is suited to the application where as the VW starter is not. Reasons being the flywheel on the subaru engine is much larger and the compression ratio is higher leading to much higher torque to start the engine which has led to starter motors on adaptor plate conversions burning out. Also the bolts do not go far enough into engine which eventually leads to breakages or strains. |

does the 2.0l offer enough "oomph"? i've read elsewhere that most people go for a 2.2... (i'm also considering a subaru powerplant depending on what the story is when the heads come off my leaky 2.1mv wasser ) |
