Hi all. New on here and skint from buying the dudes and dudettes a few libations in the Brickies.

Anyway, i need some advice (no surprise there).

A guy near me is selling a Sooth African import T3/25 and I would welcome views on what it might be worth (to buy).

This is an "n" plate, built early to mid 90s 2.6i T3 Caravelle with a 5 cyl audi petrol motor (does 22-24mpg apparently). It is bog standard, very good nick (but has an oil leak from the sump which the fella is getting a new one from South Africa). The guy has owned it since the van was 2 years old, and brought it back over here (to the UK) about 8 years ago - he lived in South Africa. By my reckoning the van has spent 8 years here and 8 years in S A - hence the lack of tin worm. The interior has all 9 seats and seems as good as new. No rust to speak of on the body. It is Mot'd and taxed, has 200km on the clock with a fsh (ish). It has aircon and pas and a towbar. It is a nasty maroon colour, and has square headlights.

Anyway folks, any views would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Hi Alvaboy,

Due to the scarcity of these vehicles, you must apply the old addage of "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

I bought my '91 Microbus (lower spec than the caravelle) last year for £5k and believe that I got a good deal at the time (not knowing much about T3's at the time). With hindsite - I believe that that day was equivalent to winning the lottery! I love the thing and now realise how much better the SA is to any of the European vehicles. But don't let your seller know that!

Just be aware, ownership can become addictive as you research the different elements and try to get sources for parts or information.

Lets see some pics of your intended, and where are you?

Brian.

Hey, another 2.6i so that makes all of 5 or maybe 6 in the UK

Buy it!

Best production T3 ever and a great daily driver. Not quick as such, but brisk enough to keep up with modern traffic and with a soundtrack like no other Wink

" It's a nasty maroon colour and has square headlights "

Is it that bad ?????? LOL

Mine ain't !!!!!  Despite the colour   ................... . . . . . . .      .      .         .           .Wink

When you get it speak to us about rust proofing, they all need it, so earlier the better IMO. We also seem to have better contacts in SA now so specific  2.6 ltr parts shouldn't be problem, speak to Ian etc etc.

The SA ones don't seem to be as well rust proofed as the German ones... I suppose there wasn't much need in South Africa. Here in NZ, the SA ones seems to have rust issues nearly on par with those imported from the UK early on. I've seen them rust in funny places!

I'm starting to think we have far more SA version here than german ones! There's always a SA on the local auction site (trademe).

Allan,

If you have so many over there, do you have a better spares supply situation than we do? Which leads on to the perennial question that we Brits keep asking......... Do you have access to Service Manuals and Wiring Diagrams?  This is like seeking the Holy Grail!

They do seem to rust in different places to the Euro built ones !!  Invest in some Vactan !!! NOW !!!!

I think some of the SA forum guys have the manuals and hopefully will put them on their forum.

PS. If it's the one I'm thinking about with large wheels it might be worth checking the springs, I think they might be different front to back ??  Also I think I sourced some front discs for it a couple of years ago so at least you won't have the problem of finding replacement vented front discs in this country !  Good luck with viewing / test drive. Let us know how you get on ........

What's the asking price?
Then you could be advised on if it was a good deal.

If it's a late model 2.6i Caravelle in good original condition then the seller probably knows how few are in GB !! Price guide between 8 & 12K for a very good condition late 90's to end of production or 4 - 8 k for a mid 90's model I  would guess ??

It's not like mine & other's who have the "common as muck" 2.5 is it ??? LOLWink

Any 5 cyl is still way better than any WBX !!!  including Oetty's !!!

Spoke to alvaboy today, that '96 bus is a bargain at the asking price (nothing like as much as Charlie thinks)

It's got a couple of blisters out back but paint is believed to be original. Very nice inside.

It just needs that MFI cupboard to go on the bonfire asap and the centre bench putting back in the correct place Wink

Assuming we're talking about the same bus...if I had the asking in my back pocket, I'd be up the airport like a shot with a one-way cheapoair ticket to Glasgow!

Sorry love, no new kitchen this year LOL

Thanks again for all of this guys. The good news (for you or some lucky person) is that this van is not for me. Nothing to do with the van at all. I drove it last night and it drives lovely. Very nippy, nice power steering etc. For me, at the moment - just too specialised. I spoke to Doug (the very obliging owner who also looks on here sometimes too), and he is totally cool about it. Anyway, here is the gumtree link http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/transporter/95280026  . As they say in this neck of the woods " fill yer boots".
