Hello people. Can you give me some advice please? I have a 1990 LT coachbuilt motorhome which just failed its mot - one count being too much play in an upper wishbone pivot. I've fitted new bushes into the wishbone but didn't know about the eccentric washers on the pivot bolt till I got it all apart. I noted from the 'Squeaky bushings' thread started by Canada LT28 that I should have marked it before taking it apart but I'm also in the dark about whether I should be packing the pivot tube with grease etc. Can anyone provide a guide or some tips before I start reassembling? I've started looking for a manual online/to buy but not found one yet.
Many thanks

You need to get a Haynes manual for suspension etc.
Halfrauds etc will order you one. |

JoolsTools, you have done well, no need for a manual since July09 Adding some details of your vehicle in your signature helps narrow down the responses too. I, and probably almost everyone else has a Haynes. ?Anyone got one of these?

There is no need to pack the pivot tube with grease, as there should be no movement of the bolt within the tube. All the movement is taken by the rubber bush, hence the final tightening should be done with the vehicle weight on the wheels. Did you weld the new bushes in?

Hi mat_the_cat I have set the camber based on the position I can see the pivot to be in on the offside - which I know is very approximate - but on your advice I'll reset this once it's back on it's wheels, get the MOT and then get the tracking and camber done. I haven't welded the bushes in - I made the assumption that VW did it to aid assembly. Is it essential to do so? Also, what should I torque the pivot pin up to? Thanks for your advice

Yeah, meant to put that too... I believe the spots of weld there there to prevent the bush moving - I certainly can't see a vehicle manufacturer putting in an extra operation if it wasn't required.. That said, once things start to rust it may well not move anyway. If you really don't want to take off again, you could mark with paint to check it doesn't move in use. Don't know the torque offhand but you'd be unlikely to over torque it by hand! Edited by mat_the_cat - 06 Aug 12 at 02:12 |

Depends on your abilities really, but it's a straightforward job. You'll need something like a 17 mm allen key which you may not already have, and a welder. Other than that, standard tools.

cheers mat, i was just wondering if others who have done this job had trouble getting the bushes out of the wishbone. abilities wise i should be fine iv rebuilt plenty of cars and bikes and served my apprenticeship as a mechanic but i dont do that as my main living anymore, mainly now as a hobby or necessity and friends projects. last time i did bushes was a ford mondeo in the comfort of a workshop on ramps with air tools, so not looking forward to doing these on the drive lol. thanks again for the reassurance mat, i will post and let you all know how it went. also hopefully i will get round to doing my build post and pics soon, it is a complete re-fit inside and body work and re-paint outside plus addition on a row of 3 seats with belts to make it seat 6 in total.
Thansk Rob

You should be fine then, just grind off any weld holding the bushes in and knock 'em out with a hammer. The casing is steel so the rubber doesn't absorb the blows. Then to draw the new ones in I used a length of threaded rod across the wishbone and a couple of old sockets.
Looking forwards to the build thread! |

Thank you very much Mat.
We are away for 2 weeks, hopefully in the LT, so when we get back i will sort out the build thread and although it will be nice to know if others like it it would also be nice to think it may help others with ideas or a bit of an how to guide to go along with the others on here. Rob

If it would be worthwhile making some proper mandrels then measure them up and I do not mind making them for future use................probably mine, I suppose.
