Hi all,
I think I am being overcharged labour hour wise for an engine job so wanted forum views.
Job was to install a 1y engine into a t3 5 speed manual that had previously had an aaz. Aaz engine was already removed but gearbox left in van, along with all water piping and the throttle cable and wiring loom. I had removed sump (jx), exhaust middle and backbox, engine mount arms, dipstick, exhaust manifold. The 1y was also on the floor, engine mount arms removed, but both inlet and outlet Manifolds to remove and change. Various hoses cut but still attached to block. Golf sump and dipstick still on the 1y, as were alt, fuel and water pumps. Request was to use 1y pump and alt, fit new water pump and cambelt. Nothing I had done myself was seized or rusted, 1y had been running nicely in golf before removal. Only issue is being a chump I'd forgotten to remove gear linkage then dropped the box, so the shifter rod did need looking at.
Can anyone with experience of the job tell me roughly how long it should take from here please?
Thanks a lot.

Thinking to how long previous engine swaps have taken me, as an amateur, on my driveway etc
Im going to be the first to make myself look a cock and say 20hrs tops, all in, any more than that and i would be asking Qs?
Have done an AAZ on my driveway in the middle of winter on the side of a hill in the Brecons. swapped the pump and cambelt before handon a pallet in my garage and it took two days but that was starting at 10 once frost had gone and stop at 5 ish when it got dark and too cold. Thats outside on concrete, no ramps etc.
Have done a couple fo JXs on same driveway and doing all prep work on 'new' engine ie pump/belt etc and its 2 days give or take a bit. Maybe a few hours on day 3 fettling.

Yes I wouldn't want to do one for less than 20 hrs. There are always pit falls that take loads of time which you forget about when you are doing it for yourself. Dip stick and pump lever mod done correctly will eat in to an hour or two on its own.
it`s a big round cage but there`s too many animals in it for my liking.to address this ring lee on 07977 765818.

Ok thanks guys. yeah if it was an in the drive way job its definitely quite a job!
Anyone on here do it professionally and want to hazard a guess at how long it should take a pro? I've paid for a lot less hours than than that in the past.
Throttle lever mod was purchased from brickwerks so that just needed installing on pump, most specialist job I suspect would be welding a new exhaust section to mate with the backbox.
Cheers.

20 hours at £50 an hour is a grand, that seems a bit much to me?

its not the cost of the job thats the issue to most mechanics. like lee said its the time. smallest issue can turn into a ball-ache!

My second swap was well prepared. All bits and bobs purchased in advance, 1Y engine reconditionned and ready to accept the JX bits. All relevant tools at hand.
I started on tuesday morning 10:00 AM..... and finished on Saturday afternoon 15:00.  (workshop closes at 5pm, an hour of for lunch)
Had the facility of a pro workshop to do it..... Half of that time is cleaning mucky stuff coming out the JX.

I am competent, but still an amateur.

Hope this will help you
