Hi anyone done a conversion from 5cyl 2.5tdi to 6cyl 2.8(merc/Vw lt 156bhp)? Have a 99 mk2 camper with a dead engine, just trying to find out exactly what's required from donor vehicle( prob lt46ambulance)
Cheers Terry

think the 2.8 is an oddball engine made by someone else in south America so think sourcing one would be quite difficult

It's a merc and vw motor. Five pot too don't know what's involved in fitting it though. Why not refit a 109 and map it? They can get 159 bhp out of them.

Yes its aMWM engine and its 4cyl, in the early ones they are mechanical injection not E TDI not to sure about later versions I`m not 100% but I think it`s the same engine isuzu used in there 4x4`s

The 2.8 merc engine is 5 cyl E TDI and was not used in the early LT`s(03-04 back) not sure about the later one`s and crafter though

As far as im aware

The four pot is the 130 bhp Otto engine.

The 158 bhp one is the five pot.

Before 02 they used a mwm 4cyl engine 2.8 lt  in the lt`s  the later one`s are cdi ? not sure if its a revamped vw 5 cyl or the merc engine ,the op was talking about a 99 van so it would not be viable to fit a cdi so presumed they were talking about the early 2.8 tdi  even though they stated 156 bhp

The early merc`s 2.8 were merc engines loosely based on the old 2.5  5cyl from the 190 e merc but di not idi and they were only used in the sprinters why vw did not use them, I have not got a clue as they were cracking engines once they sorted the head gasket problems  and it would be a viable option for the OP to fit one but I can say from experience it`s a LOT off work
