Can someone help me please? I have a 1981 T3 with a 1600 petrol engine.
I have a mk3 golf with a 2.0AGG 8V engine I am planning to fit.
I think I am right in saying it will fit in with the 1600 diesel gearbox and cross member?
Is this the only combination or will my petrol gearbox work without modification.
Its a popular conversion and I'm not scared of the work involved just want to know what parts I need before I start ripping it apart.

Hi Simon,

You need:
Diesel bell housing, pooh plate, starter, flywheel and clutch. If you use a petrol box you will need to take 15mm (i think) off the input shaft, or fit a diesel input shaft)
Diesel engine bars and mounts.
Diesel sump and oil pickup
A full set of diesel coolant hoses.
High pressure fuel pump (with a filter, I used the one off the golf)
Garyd's wiring diagram
A speed sensor to give a signal to the ecu.
Have a look at Barney's (T3panel) post in the bus park and see if you can beat it!
Gearbox ratios are an issue, but there are options for that when you have it going (flipped a4 or some diesel boxes (see my post in the buspark) or a Aiden Talbot rebuild).
Keep the front and rear calipers from the golf, they are an ideal upgrade.

It all adds up to a fair lump of dosh - or you could just buy my full setup - you could have it complete in a couple of days :-)

Nice conversion but out of my budget.
I'm into modifying and converting myself so will do it the hard way, but thanks for the info.

Would the 1600 gearbox be short on the ratio, ie would it over rev?
If so what box would give a better final drive ratio?

Hi all , I'm in the middle of this conversion except i started with a 1.7 KY and have the AGG nearly ready to go in, couldn't help but notice flufflenarnia said

Do mk3 golf calipers fit the front? I hope not as I scrapped em with the rest of the car Cry
I've been looking around for a decent brake upgrade without loads of machining/costs

I have the epitec ones on the front which use passat disks and calipers, but I think you could use the golf ones. For the back I used golf mk3 ones:

Oh wow that's really tidy, I've been searching allsorts of different brake set-ups but that looks ideal, I knew I should of hung on to them.
Are the fronts a direct fit?
Any machining involved?

Fronts I used this:

302mm vented disks, the same as on my 13 passat.

The disks and pads from euro car parts, all the rest from epytec, Germany, they have an eBay store.
They bolt straight on to the later hubs (with single pot floating caliper).

The rears are my own home brew design.

What gearbox did you use?

I like the brake conversion but mine is a 1981 van so hubs may not work on the back.
Worth a try though.

The back isn't an issue, its the front that changed to floating callipers in 86 ish.

My gearbox was from a Audi a4 1.8 20v, code ddu.

I take it you flipped it.
Did you have to cut or reshape the cross member/chassis ?

Fits straight in, no chassis mods.

No, you can't, the starter is on the wrong side of the gearbox on the golf. I used a passat/Audi dmf and clutch and starter. The starter is much smaller and packs a punch.
