I know, what must a black market head unit be worth these days? Not much surely...

Thanks for all the nice comments so far. The bus has potential, I can't wait to get some fresh wood into it.

my bet would be the roof vent, the damage is too severe at the top to just be damp from the shower

that damage is not caused by the shower or the vent it is caused by the sealent breaking down on the roof corner cappings ,you will find the other side is probably the same ,if you ever go on the roof of your gipsy you will see where water always sit in the two corners just before the overcab, your really need to remove the outer side panels to effect a proper repair, you can then reseal the corner cappings properly and replace all the rotten wood not just what you can see there ,you will also find that rot has spread to the frame work behind the wardrobe and maybe the overcab frame work and the lower framework, have a good feel of the woodwork in the lower rear corners of your overcab, be prepered to get coverd in sealing goo

frame work aside it looks like a nice straight van to me

Tis always best gipsy /cheetah owners to park your van with the front in the air so all the water runs off the back of the van

sorry forgot to mention ,wall board

birmingham boards

olearys motorhomes

and there is a guy in halesowen who has a good selection ,your ok for toilet any way as it needs to be covered in lino any way so you will never even see it ,me and graham always replace the original with 3mm ply and veneer (evo stick it to ply)which is washable but very similar colour to original from birmingham boards

Mazz,

What actually holds the aluminium roof skin on? Is it just the ally strips on the roof corners and above the rear window? Also, what kind of sealant would you use when putting it back together?

Finally (for now), What thickness plywood do I need for the roof, 4mm, 6mm or 9mm?

Thanks

Stewart

all of the skins on a gipsy are held on the same

basically once you have unscrews the corner capping's ,skylights and other bits the roof will just peel of ,it is also lightly glued on to with some kind of pink spray on glue ,it takes reasonable effort to break the glue contact but two people should be able to peel it back o.k.

if the roof is rotten than you will find the glue is long gone anyway

there is a big difference between the roof construction and the van sides and that the whole roof is covered in ply (cant remember how thick just pull your skylight out to find out)

as for sealants for the side capping's and windows you use a non setting mastic, dont use sikaflex on your windows, hook up point etc (anything plastic) as they will be a nightmare to remove again ,i normally just go round the edge of every thing with a thin bead of sikaflex 221 once its all back together ,you then need to leak test your hole van

PS me and graham hate that none setting mastic it gets on everything the thought of it makes me feel all sticky we have now affectionately named mastic sealing time as GOOWANG you'll see what i mean soon enough.

Right, it's been a mad couple of days but the roof has been off, timber replaced and roof back on again! Pics to follow, I haven't got them off the camera yet. It did look a sight with the roof skin peeled off, even Dr Baxter stopped by on his way home to swear in disbelief!

Only problem was that I didn't completely finish before a massive rainstorm this afternoon. I'm losing the bathroom vent and aerial hole but didn't have time to properly seal up the holes - the tape I used came away so it did leak in a bit. I'm going to try to get it sorted tomorrow.

I feel a bit like I've been run over - I don't think I've ever worked so hard! There's still quite a bit to do, I've still got to put the sealing strips back on the rear corners and to seal the windows in properly. We went to the caravan shop this afternoon and bought a gorgeous new Heki skylight. The old one didn't leak but this should really let some light in.

There are a few holes to seal up on the roof. It used to have a roof box and I'm also getting rid of the TV aerial and bathroom vent. I'm thinking about putting a sheet of chequer plate or something on the roof and sealing round it.

Also took the gearbox out today as it is noisy and needs a rebuild.

I keep saying I will put some chequer plate on mine as the roof is really slippy when wet and i 've nearly fell a couple of times when get boards down off the roof-or maybe some of that tread grip stuff they put down in factories?
