Many of you will probably know my Gipsy - its the ex busbodies previously aircooled gipsy that came into the uk about 7 years ago - one of the first I saw at mainstream shows
Heres a pic shortly after I bought it, rebuilt the knackered aircooled engine and fitted its current porsche design 90s
I ran it in this guise for a couple of years until the lack of power drove me insane ( it was a rebuilt 2.0 cu with ported heads, stateside cam and a pair of dellorto Drlas) and over the following winter I sold the engine and used the cash to build a decent rover V8 ( 3.5 stiff block, arp bottom end, real steel cam, ported heads, mallory dual point dizzy) at this point I also converted it to watercooled PROPERLY with a new genuine watercooled front panel fron schofields, a compete T3 heater assembly with blower fan from a watercooled van, a new radiator and plastic front to rear coolant pipes & new heater hoses - after a month with the original tired 2.0 6 rib gearbox I had the box rebuilt by a T3 gearbox specialist (In Henley - cant remember his name) who rebuilt & upgraded the internals and its been fine since !
Heres another couple of pics after conversion on its maiden voyage down to newquay
Its been running like this for 3 years now - mechanically its excellent - has covered over 3000 miles so far this year, towed my racecar to santa pod and back from home regularly & to EBi and back, In the last month its been to spa & back and this last week we have spent camping on the lizard and then at the cornwall jamboree - so it gets about
Fuelwise - its not much different to how it was with the aircooled motor - except you can cruise at 70 effortlessly ! Its pretty much one of a kind - not any other V8 gipsys with a towbar about as far as I know Anyway its time for a change - yes it has some bad points - it doesnt leak BUT it could do with the usual roof peeling, timberwork as it has suffered the same fate that they all tend to, its heating works well, the water heater worked fine up until a month ago but now fails to light ( makes the noise but no ignition ?) all the water system/pump etc work fine, fridge works well on gas/240 and 12v and its pretty much standard inside apart from a few groken cupboard handles - its mot is until next july and it has ZERO underside rust & never had any welding apart from the new front panel and that was just a cosmetic exercise - comes with toilet, mains hook up lead, etc - all charging and electrical systems work well.
So whats it worth ? I plan to use it for Vw action this weekend then put it up for sale - probably planning to ebay but I am realistic about the price - its not a show winning example just a very usable workhorse/family camper that could do with some tidying ( and a damn sight better deal than a lot of the bays I have seen for sale recently !)
