I think it's the B20's and B23's.
Brilliant engine, torquey as f*ck.
As basic as basic gets.
If you must insist on putting something else in then thats a good choice.

grass track engine builder Russ Tyler recons he can get 300bhp out of those b230k volvo engines......8 valve increased to 2.9 and revving to 9000rpm. not cheap though at that spec. |

Must admit, it would be nice to know a little more about whats required for fitting these engine.
I have a petrol syncro with a 2.1 mv in it, would one of the above mentioned volvo engine produce as much torque and go as the current one.
Where do you get an adapter plate from.

I have the 2.3 (B23) in my doka. As Baxter says, its got bag fulls of tourque. Cheap as chips too.
Mine is the carb version, im thinking of changing it for the fuel injection version, if & when i do i'll remove the adaptor plate and copy it to a tempate for anyone interested.

Its a common conversion in doka's, because it sits upright and is pretty tall - would be hard to fit it in a van / camper as it will come high up into the rear bit...
Can't remember the name of the swedish company who did the conversions....

The missus is in it (innit!) but will get some pics when its back & light. No i dont think there are many specialist parts required other than the gearbox adaptor plate. Universal collant hoses are good.

i have done a bit of resurch on these volvo engines from the norweigans, real volvo know all's. the b23 is from the 1980's 240. but the replacement engine b230, is an almost identical engine in size, shape and weight but fuel injected and was used from about 1988 up untill 1998, in most modles. non turbo (b230fd) 116bhp , low preasure turbo 136bhp and high preasure turbo 182bhp. there was also a non turbo b230fx with a revised head and cam with 132bhp. my mate realy rates all the above engines as the best volvo has ever made. and recons that they should return around 25ish mpg. last year a few of us drove 2 volvo's (hpt and a lpt) both with over 130 000m on them from london to norway at about 80mph most of the way with no problems at all, my norweigan mate has a hpt 940 with over 470,000km which is compleatly stock and origional, just regulary serviced. in norway the oil and filters get changed in the spring and autium.
has any one got same pic's of one of these engines installed in a syncro. just wondering if the protection bars can still be used? and how they sit in a doka. still wondering neil |

My dad had a 740, a '86 model, sure that had a B230.
Had a Weber sat on top.
Ace engine, loved it, only car he ever bought new, it had pads, discs, clutches etc, you know, stuff that wears out but never did anything other than that.
I think it's a really good choice for a DoKa.

They are great, many of the engines had pierburg carbs - a decent upgrade was to change to a weber or go the 760 (GLE is think) route and fit fuel injection. I had a head gasket go when i got mine, but in fairness when i took the head off it was due to not having any antifreeze in it, and th head had pitted. I picked up another head - with all manifolds, carb etc for £80 and whacked it back together in less than 4 hours, jobs a good un!
The only thing i want to do is change the exhaust, the one on there is a bit crude.
Oh, they are also "safe" in the event of a timing belt failure!

I reckon that the late 80's 240 (with the K-Jetronic, not the EFI) was one of the best cars ever made (Like ever)
Does everything it says on the tin and I could list everything that goes wrong on one on the back of a fag paper! |

I had an '86 2.3 Estate with the K jetronic from nearly new. Sold it to a mate a few years ago, its still running at 230,000 miles. 23mpg round town, 30 on a run (overdrive 5th). It never broke down, never had the head off, should never have sold the car really but this Saab 9-5 Aero estate came up..... |

so these engines are looking like a good option for a doka then, as some one menshioned above dose any one know what's involved in insatlling one? is it realy that easy? the kenidy list an adapter plate for b18 b20 and b21 engines any one know about the b230?
i have mailed the norwegians and they recon that the feul injection is not that complex to to work out as long as thet have a everything has been removed from the donor car (or they have removed everything). oh and what are the options for the exauset system can the vw back box be used? neil |

good old brick-yard, was talking to echo beach about this swap yesterday, and here's the thread, come on cliffbase, will be waiting for the weekend to see the pics, got an engine less doka sitting here looking sorry for itself, would an lpg'd motor be economical enough to use as a daily, please say its a cheap and easy swap, , would be one less stood in the garden, , and far cooler than the trusty 106!
